Demo Day!

Demo Day is always quick and satisfying. Along with the look of progress came some expected setbacks and a fun surprise!

Conveniently, I was out of the house for most of the demo and only got an "after" picture. Most of the dark color you see by the sink area is actually a dark paint, but in the far corner there was mold from a leaky window that someone patched themselves... Sigh... I knew something was up with the window because it sloped downward in the back left corner. After examination from the exterior, we could tell that there was some wood rot. I was hoping it was just the plywood under the tile that had been water damaged and we could just replace it. It turned out to be a bit more complicated.

Yes, there was rotted plywood. However, someone had "fixed" the leak themselves prior to us owning the home. It appears they chopped up wood and put it in epoxy. It was a challenge to dig out. To top it off, the window frame wasn't sitting on anything. The supported plywood went up to the frame, but not under it. It's surprising it hadn't collapsed! Check it out:

We leveled it out the best we could and used Hardie board instead of plywood in hopes of preventing future problems there. We're also going to get rid of the cranks, replace the board the cranks were on and fix the side windows. I'm not worried about ventilation since we have a sliding door next to the window and there is a vent over the cooktop. I really did not want the expense or time it would take to get new custom windows and I actually like the character of old wood windows. It's not everyone's taste, but it works for me!

To get rid of the mold, we replaced the drywall. There was no mold underneath the drywall so that was a small win!

As for the exciting find, check it out!

An old metal Mobil Oil truck. The tank part is removable and Jackson is having a blast playing with it! I wonder how old it is. (Chime in if you know!) The house was built in '69, but it looks to predate that. I think it's cool that it was discovered when another little boy was living here! A gift from another generation!
